Ellen Sutherland was 32 years old. Eight children. Widowed. Alone.
Her parents passed away before 1890. Robert Powell died in 1878. Louisa Eliza McCullough Powell died in 1888. Ellen’s brother Clinton moved to Nebraska in the 1880’s, married, and had two daughters. He must have returned to Iowa to help his sister. His son, Robert Osier, was born in Iowa in 1893.
One of Charles’ older brothers lived in Iowa, Lemuel Roger Sutherland. He may have offered assistance to the young widow.
The only thing that kept her going was the promise that she made to her husband.
She would take the family south.
